Developing English Language Skills through Current Health Topics

Abstract

Developing English Language Skills through Current Health Topics is a CBI course designed for EFL/ESL pre-intermediate teenage and adolescent learners. The paper aims at providing language and content to the young generation out there wishing to improve second language proficiency and at the same time learn about important health preventive skills. The Ten-week course is pregnant with several engaging activities on the four language skills, preventive measures and information on HIV/AIDS, malaria and infant mortality rate in the learning plan and lesson plans. The entire project provides opportunities for young second language learners’ to challenge themselves to other methods of second language learning. This claim is however proven by the 8-weeks piloting where students demonstrated a great deal of responsibility, exposed themselves to various learning styles, improved language proficiency in speaking, reading, listening and writing, improve and acquired important preventive health skills.
