Abstract:
The purpose of the content-based course entitled “Teaching English through Architecture” is to enable learners to improve their English language skills (speaking and listening in particular) and enrich Architecture related vocabulary. The course is also aimed at providing basic knowledge about some well-known architects and various architectural styles: Greek, Roman, Gothic, Byzantine, Renaissance, Armenian, Modern and Organic. The project deliverables comprise a detailed syllabus, assessment plan with grading rubrics and checklists, as well as twenty lesson plans with all handouts and necessary materials for the lessons. The course was piloted with Upper-Intermediate level students at “Eurasia” Language Training Center. At the end of the course students were assessed through a vocabulary quiz which indicated students’ general acquisition of architectural terminology. To evaluate students’ overall language and content learning, students were given a post self-assessment questionnaire. The overall effectiveness of the course was evaluated through a survey questionnaire provided in Armenian and Russian depending on students’ mother tongue. The results gained from the evaluation revealed that, overall, course was piloted effectively meeting the students’ expectations as well as goals and objectives initially set for the course.
