Abstract:
In response to low civic activism and participatory processes in the Armenian civic scene the current course design project aims at empowering young people to act towards a positive change. The course unifies instruction of English with civic education to serve the purpose of developing students’ communicative proficiency in English as well as raising social awareness and shaping competences for active citizenship. The course was piloted from February 10 to April 15, 2015 at the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights (www.idhr.am) with 8 young people with age range from 16 to 18. The project deliverables include the course syllabus, 15 lesson plans including activity descriptions, handouts and presentations and recommendations for course implementation. The final course evaluation, as well as in-class activity monitoring confirms that the course has reached its goals and objectives and students expressed high level of satisfaction with the course.
