The protection of national minorities in the framework of international organizations: current situation of national minorities in the Republic of Armenia

Abstract

This study is a result of the Internship Policy Project conducted with the United Nations Office in Armenia particularly UNDPI (UN Department of Public information) and UNDP (UN Development Program). The purpose of this project was to study the protection of national minorities in the framework of international organizations and current situation of national minorities in the Republic of Armenia. Accordingly, the protection of the rights of national minorities in the framework of international organizations has become one of the most important issues, because their promotion and protection of the rights of persons belonging to national minorities can contribute the political and social stability of states in which they live. On the other hand, the membership of Armenia in international organizations contributes to the development of democratic security of persons belonging to national minorities and minimizes political tensions among national minorities and government, based on the fulfillment of certain obligations and requirements. The study has an explorative objective. Local, regional and international documents concerning national minorities are analyzed. In order to find answers to several research questions, a comparative analysis of the legal documents is employed. The project includes all the legislative document, state bodies and independent organizations of Armenia, which have an important role in the field of protection of human rights of persons belonging to national minorities. In addition, for additional information project also includes thematical information from the representatives of National Minorities of Armenia and discussions about new legislative changes particularly the Law on National Minorities.
